Ah, the virtues of stress

10/20/2013

I've had a lot of stress in my life lately.  A dog with health problems, some intense job interviews, and the attendant prospect of moving somewhere that's really hard to grow succulents.

So, what do we do when we get stressed out, succ-ers?  We garden.  (At least, my mom and I do, so maybe it's genetic.)  And the detail-oriented-ness of my gardening is inversely correlated with the amount of relaxation in my life.  Which is why I used a whole bunch of teeny, tiny baby succulents and small cuttings to create this last week, in a vertical gardening frame:

...Which was really fun.  Here's a close-up:

Yes, there's a color/type pattern.  No, I don't know if all these cuttings will survive.

What is the MOST DETAIL-ORIENTED planting you've ever done?  Send me a picture; I'll put it on this blog.

I love this! Definitely some attention to detail :) I'll be really interested to see how it looks once it starts growing more. Nicely done!

That is going to be so awesome as those grow. I bet most of them will do fine. Hmmm the most detail-oriented was I guess when I planted the Hamburger BBQ grill. Lots of tiny cuttings.

A neat way to keep small cuttings.

The most detail-oriented planting I've done is the orb project that's in my book, Succulents Simplified. All those sempervivums! Sounds like your life is in transition. You're interviewing for jobs and you may possibly move? And your poor little dog is ill? Geez. Your grid planting is the perfect project to help you sort your thoughts and calm your emotions. I recall that during a particularly stressful time in my life, doing jigsaw puzzles was soothing. (I lived in an apartment...no garden for therapy.) I hope your stress lessens soon!
